The 1979 chart was, to some degree, a reshuffling of the previous year’s chart and must have given Peel concerns that an all-time chart would be repetitive and would need tweaking to be a long term feature. That said, there were 23 new chart entries with a decent number from the new wave genre to compliment the old punk standards.
The breakthrough of the Jam was represented by 4 entries including “Down In The Tube Station” at number 4, as the old guard from 1976 said their final chart goodbyes.
The "FM" column in the list below shows the format the tracks can be collected in. Our preference is always to display the 7" if that version is available, with a 12" single as a second choice.
