Goth, as a subculture, started with the rise of goth and industrial music in the 1980s. It derived from the punk genre and would go on to become something entirely different.
The term “gothic rock” was originally coined in 1967, over the course of the 70s was used to describe the like of Joy Division, Velvet Underground and Magazine. But it wasn’t until the early 80s that Goth would become a comprehensible subgenre.
With that in mind, the 80s goth and industrial section of Vinylnet covers early and mid-eighties acts who favoured the big hair and black clothes.
The ringleaders for this genre would include the Cure, Siouxsie, Cocteau Twins, Coil, Psychic TV, Nick Cave and the Sisters of Mercy.
